Vibrator Storage and Privacy

A Visitor Asks...

"I want to buy a vibrator online but I don't know where I would hide it. I'm afraid my roommates will find it and I need some ideas on where to store it discreetly. I also need to know if there are vibrators that are quiet enough that no one could hear me use it from the next room."

The thought of a roommate finding your vibrator or hearing you use it in the next room is understandably unpleasant. While some people use vibrators and don't care who knows it, there's probably no shortage of people who would prefer to keep their adult toy use private. There are some things you can do to decrease the chance that a roommate would find your vibrator.

Set Boundaries

You bought a vibrator online, received it in the mail, and now you're anxious to give it a whirl. You insert batteries...all the while anticipating how wonderful your new toy is going to feel. After a few minutes you're ready to begin so you close your door, relax and settle down with your new toy. Just when you're getting into it your roommate barges in to ask if you've seen her favorite pair of high heels. OOPS...

This situation might be a bit on the dramatic side but it highlights a concern most people living with roommates have; that they will be discovered in the midst of enjoying their vibrator. Fortunately there are a few simple things you can do to prevent being a victim of a thoughtless or mindless roommate.

The first thing is to consider setting boundaries. Quite simply, you should feel confident that you would not be disturbed if your bedroom door is closed. It's reasonable to allow your roommates to enter freely if your door is open, and equally reasonable to ask your roommates knock if they see that your door is closed. It's common courtesy really, and now would be a good time to establish that boundary if you haven't already.

If setting boundaries doesn't give you the peace of mind you need to relax and enjoy your vibrator, consider installing a lock on your door. Doorknob replacements are easy to install and are available from most hardware stores. You could also consider a screw on bolt-style lock if replacing the doorknob is not an option. Installing an external bolt is usually a simple matter of lining it up and screwing it in place with a couple screws. You can always ask someone to help if you don't feel up to the task yourself.

Discreet Storage Ideas

If you're concerned about a roommate discovering your vibrator while you're away, the best way to insure that your vibrator won't be discovered is to store it in a locked compartment like a dresser drawer or lock box. The next best thing, assuming a locked compartment is not an option, is to store it in a place your roommate is unlikely to be searching for anything. Does your roommate have a habit of borrowing your socks? If so, your sock drawer wouldn't be a good place to store your sex toys. Survey your room...try to find places that your roommate is unlikely to go. Out of reach places are good, so if you have a ton of clutter under your bed, try storing your vibrator in a shoebox deep within the clutter. High places are good too; a roommate isn't likely to pull out a foot stool to search the upper reaches of your closet, that is, assuming you don't store your socks there.

Buy a Quiet Vibrator

If you're concerned about noise, consider buying a quiet vibrator. Some of our quiet vibrators include the Anal Explorer Probe, which can be used as a traditional vibrator, the Gigolo II, which is a quality silicone vibrator that has received high praise for its discretion, The LAYAspot Massager, which is basically a clitoral stimulator that is also very quiet, or the Micro Pleasure Egg, a high tech vibrator that produces very little noise. There are many others, and for ideas you may want to take a look at our Vibrator Volume Guide where you'll find a volume rating from one to five for each of the vibrators we carry. This is a valuable tool for anyone concerned about vibrator noise level.

You may also want to think about things like turning on some music if you plan to use your vibrator while your roommates are home. Alternatively, you can limit your vibrator use to times you're home alone and know you won't be disturbed. This may not be the ideal solution, but it's an option worth considering if nothing else seems to work.

If all else fails...

There is no substitute for the pleasure of a good vibrator. But if you're in a pinch and you are overwhelmed by the possibility of your roommates hearing you use your vibrator you might want to consider trying out a dildo. There are many adult toys that don't vibrate or otherwise create noise for someone to hear, and dildos are a natural alternative to vibrators. Just a thought, in case all else fails.
